NW Herald: Creators of First, Fourth Fridays events collaborate to showcase artwork

Bob Markese uses a darkroom for his digital photographs.

Art Hand creates his photographs by manipulating them with apps using only an iPhone.

Ang Pugliese uses Polaroid images.

The three are among 10 photographers taking part in an alternative photography event Oct. 3 at the Dole Mansion in Crystal Lake.

The event’s inspiration?

In the words of host and event creator and producer Nancy Merkling, “When artists collide with cameras, out of the box stuff happens.”

Hence the exhibit’s title, “Out of the Box: Where Artists and Cameras Collide.”

The invited photography exhibit brings together fine art photographers who shoot or print with an alternative process to the everyday digital photography. That, in itself, is unique, organizers say.

But what also makes the exhibit different from others regularly held as part of First Fridays at the Dole Mansion is that it brings together two organizations – the Lakeside Legacy Foundation, which hosts First Fridays, and Merkling, who puts on Fourth Fridays exhibits at The Starline in Harvard.

Simply put, each organization works to promote art.

“Our two organizations’ mission is to share with the community how special art is in all of its different mediums,” said Siobhan Cottone, Lakeside executive director. “It can be healing. It can be inspirational. Rather than looking at each other as competition, we look at each other as partners in making this community a better place by working together collaboratively.”

The partnership also gives regional artists the chance to show off, sell and promote their work.
